Vector-borne infectious diseases

The arrival of the good and warm weather marks the start of the tick and mosquito season. A point to recommend the monitoring and control of house pets for early disease diagnosis and guarantee timely  treatment to prevent serious complications.

Ticks and mosquitoes represent transmission vectors for pathogens such as Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Anaplasma platys, Borrelia burgdorferi, Babesia canis, Rickettsia rickettsii, Leishmania infantum and Dirofilaria immitis.

Most of these diseases share common clinical signs such as fever, pale mucous membranes, lethargy, anorexia, lymphadenopathy, lameness, vomiting, bleeding of varying degrees with eventual concomitant infections.

These conditions can be detected in the laborarory by virtue of their association to blood disorders (thrombocytopenia, anemia, leukopenia / leukocytosis) and biochemical markers (hyperglobulinemia and increased some liver enzymes) and additionally, serology testing should be performed to detect the levels of circulating antibodies.
