World Lupus day
10-05-2012

May 10th is World Lupus day. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE or Lupus) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the connective tissue, characterized by inflammation and tissue damage mediated by an immune reaction caused by the binding of antibodies to the cells of the body and the resulting antigen-antibody complex deposits.
Lupus can be triggered by different factors and present diverse clinical manifestations, to the extent of resembling other conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or Multiple Sclerosis. The cause of Lupus is still unknown, with research pointing at genetic, hormone and viral infection components. Approximately 1% of the population is affected by

Lupus in this country, of which 90% are women between 15 and 55 years of age. Lupus patients require constant medical supervision and continued treatment to alleviate its symptoms.

Daily aerobic exercise, indicated for the prevention of breast cancer and colon
30-04-2012

Recent studies show there are more than sufficient evidence to affirm that aerobic exercise practiced daily prevents two of the most common tumors in the country. So spend a minimum of thirty minutes a day walking, swimming, running and cycling improves immune defenses against cancer and reduced cancer recurrence by improving their quality of life.

The recommendations are an exercise which is weekly caloric expenditure of 2,000 kcal, include exercises to improve strength five days a week and muscle conditioning for 2 to 3 times a week, activating the eight major muscle groups and doing sets of 12 to 15 repetitions.

National Day
25-04-2012

Today marks the National Day of Cystic Fibrosis, a disease in our country affects one in 3,500 people, while one in 30 people are carriers of the disease.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a recessive genetic disease caused by mutations in the CFTR gene. CF affects mainly the lungs, and to a lesser extent other exocrine glands, due to malfunction of ion transport channel. Moreover, it was found that the presence of mutations in the CFTR gene associated with a polymorphism of the same gene (5T polymorphism) can cause CF related diseases such as congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) or azoospermia obstructive, manifested in the form of male infertility.

One of the main obstacles in the genetic study of CF is the large number of mutations described in the population and the large size of the CFTR gene, which makes it difficult to cover all the possible mutations present in an individual.

Echevarne laboratory provides a new technique in which up to 50 different mutations identified, as well as variants 5T, 7T and 9T polymorphism located in intron 8. The technique used is an allele specific amplification (ARMS-PCR) followed by a screening using capillary electrophoresis. This technique allows to cover about 84% of the mutations described in patients with CF in the Spanish population, expanding the coverage level offered by other techniques.

Laboratorio Echevarne has been awarded UNE-EN ISO/lEC 17025
17-04-2012

Laboratorio Echevarne has been awarded  UNE-EN ISO/lEC 17025: 2005 (eGA-ENAe-LEC) certification to perform environmental analyses

Laboratorio Echevarne has been ISO 17025  accredited for physical-chemical and microbiological analyses in drinkable waters, sewage, untreated water destined for consumption and cooling tower waters, as well as physical-chemical analyses of air quality in working environments.

The National Spanish Accreditation Body (ENAC) aims at increasing social trust on the technical know-how of accredited institutions to contribute to the wellbeing of people, the quality of the products and services and the protection of the environment, leading also to an increased competitive advantage of Spanish products and services. This accreditation represents the public acknowledgement of Laboratorio Echevarne’s technical capacity to maximize service trust and fidelity.

World Water Day
22-03-2012

Today, March 22, marks the World Water Day. This day aims to remember that water is a human right essential.
This year under the subject "Water and Food Security" remember the importance of water to guarantee and secure the future of our ecosystem.
Most of the water 'drink' is incorporated into the food we eat. Currently there are 7,000 million people to feed on the planet and forecasts say there will be another 2,000 million for 2050.

Accreditation for gluten-containing food
06-03-2012

Laboratorio Echevarne has been awarded full accreditation for gluten-containing food product determination and has become authorized as FACE’s Testing Laboratory (Spanish Federation of Celiac Disease Patients’ Association) for its seal of branding warranty.

Celiac Disease responds to gluten protein intolerance leading to an adverse reaction to certain protein components present in wheat, barley, rye and oats. Laboratorio Echevarne, following FACE’s accreditation, offers food manufacturers all the technical and quality means available to guarantee compliance of their products to international requirements and thus ensure safe food consumption for celiac patients.

The seal of branding warranty “FACE controlled” is aimed at labeling and guaranteeing product safety for celiac consumers; products presenting this label are all verified and compliant with maximum gluten levels for celiac safety.
Maximum food containing gluten levels can be only monitored by specifically accredited laboratories. The guarantee seal can be used by specialized manufacturers of celiac-safe food manufacturers or by other general food manufacturer producing gluten-free products. The guarantee seal also includes specific control of high risk raw material suppliers, resulting in a highly efficient quality assurance destined for celiac patients.

Problems in the gums
01-02-2012

The Official College of Odontologists, in collaboration with the General Advice of Dentists' Colleges of Spain and with the scientific support of SEPA was celebrated from January 16 to January 31 the campaign Health of the Gums. During this time, a group of dentists realized free reviews in order to help and detect diseases periodontales as the gingivitis or the periodontitis.

Echevarne Laboratory offers molecular techniques that help dentists and periodontists to treat and prevent periodontal disease. The study of genetic predisposition to periodontal disease is useful both for the patients and for their descendants. It is important to know in advance which of the patient's children have inherited this genetic variation and to what extent, to take appropriate preventive measures before the disease appears. Taking preventive measures (maintenance of low plaque, scrupulous brushing and more frequent reviews) can maintain healthy gums.

Vitamin D helps to anticipate cardiovascular diseases
26-01-2012

A study published in the magazine American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that the men who consume the quantity recommended of vitamin D are less inclined to suffer a cardiovascular disease that those who present low levels of this nutrient. On the other hand, the vitamin D favors the growth of the bones and prepares infections.

The above mentioned nutrient is synthesized by the skin by means of the exhibition to the solar light and also we can obtain it consuming fished oily, oil of liver of fish and eggs.

Respiratory viruses
11-01-2012

Laboratorio Echevarne launches a new technique for the detection of respiratory viruses from nasopharyngeal swabs and bronchoalveolar lavage.Acute respiratory infections are the leading cause of disease and can have serious consequences in children, elderly people and immunoupressed individuals. The upper respiratory tract infections are commonplace, typically manifested as a common cold. These infections have usually good prognosis and mild severity. However, the lower respiratory tract infections can lead to complications such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia.

Laboratorio Echevarne now offers a new analytical test that simultaneously amplifies up to 26 different respiratory viruses using real-time PCR . This accurate viral detection protocol assists the clinician in establishing the exact nature of the disease and consequently prescribe the most appropriate treatment for each case.
